Excellent textbook to debate modern presidential issues...perhaps challenging for those who know little about presidency

I read this textbook for my POLS 413: U.S. Presidency class along with another textbook called "The American Presidency" 5th edition by Milkis and Nelson. "Understanding the Presidency" 6th edition does a good job complementing "The American Presidency." While "The American Presidency" presents an outline for the major changes in the presidency during a chronological approach, this textbooks ("Understanding the Presidency") contains essays in which political scientists debate many issues pertinent to the modern presidency.

The following are some examples of the issues discussed:

the nominating process
the presidential mandate (contains Dahl's article "The Myth of the Presidential Mandate")
the permanent campaign
the president's ability to manage the government
the unitary executive theory
the president's relationship with Congress
prerogative powers to fight War of Terror

In most sections, Pfiffner seems to try to give both sides of the story. For example, when judging George W. Bush' legacy as president, Pfiffner includes an anti-Bush essay by Sean Wilentz entitled "The Worst President in History?" and a pro-Bush essay by Karl Rove entitled "The Long View."

OVERALL OPINION:

I think the textbook is a bit difficult for introductory students who do not know much about the presidency (ex: students who have not memorized the list of presidents and who do not know some of the major events that occurred during each presidency). However, if you combine this text with another text such as "The American Presidency," I certainly think introductory students could learn a lot.

Certainly, I recommend the textbook for those who are ready and eager to discuss and debate questions like: "Did George W. Bush abuse his power as president when adapting a view of presidential power called the unitary executive theory? If so, what are some arguments that one might employ to justify his behavior? What are some counter arguments to the arguments that attempt to justify Bush's behavior?"

Its target was the appeasers of the 1930s, the leading culprits being Baldwin, Chamberlain and Halifax who had left the country so ill-prepared, and who, by their pusillanimity, had emboldened Hitler and Mussolini; and in the case of the last two still favoured some accommodation with the fascist dictators. In today's parlance, it would be called a wake-up call. It was very successful selling about 200,000 copies.

Kenneth Morgan, Michael Foot's biographer, describes the book as consisting of 'a series of brief vignettes of key episodes or personalities, the latter invariably foolish or dishonest.' Michael Foot wrote eight of the chapters, the first and most powerful one being on Dunkirk.

Although Michael Foot was the main contributor, and the one who suggested 'Cato' as the umbrella pseudonym, the other two, as Michael Foot would be the first to admit, Peter Howard and Frank Own should not be forgotten.

Seventy years on, Guilty Men has not lost its readability and power to enrage.

The swords of WWII are rusty and forgotten, but this work of the pen endures. It is polemic of the highest kind - focused, informed and brutal in its judgement, marshalling fact and rhetoric to devastating effect. For any student of politics or history, this little book is a must read not just as a devastating critique of appeasement, but more importantly as a reminder of what responsibilities the elected leaders of any democracy bear and how easily they can delude themselves and their followers in the pursuit of the soft options. Vigilance must be eternal.

This is such an important topic at this time, as traditional healthcare delivery is being transformed from what we all knew it to be. With successful change comes discomfort and new challenges. Effective communication is critical to patient safety from all perspectives (i.e. - patient-to-nurse, family-to-nurse, family-to-doctor, nurse-to-nurse, nurse to doctor, and the many other service areas of a hospital that are hand-off points). While new technologies can aid effective communications, they call also produce new risks that have to be considered and mitigated. This text is written from the perspective of those who are on the front lines and deal with these challenges daily...and have worked to overcome them and share their experiences. Beth, your devotion to your craft is inspirational to us all but most importantly to the patient who puts the trust of their lives in the hands of their caregivers.

Really amazing book. Beth Boynton shares professional resources, case examples and wonderfully engaging writing. This book is exceptional. So many nurse experts- tons of information. Just a great book for nursing students, new nurse graduates and experienced nurses all alike. I love it and will continue to recommend it to any nurse I know. Great work, Beth!

Beth Boynton has created a book about communication that should be in the hands of every nursing student entering the profession (and seasoned nurses, too!) I'm honored to have provided a small section of this book with my own reflections on communication and culture. About the Author

Leslie Klenerman is an Emeritus Professor of Orthopedic Surgery from the University of Liverpool. As a consultant orthopedic surgeon he worked at Northwick Park Hospital and Clinical Research Center until he moved to Liverpool University. For the past seven years he has worked in the Anatomy Department at Cambridge University as a Senior Demonstrator. He is the author of several publications.

About the Author

Charles Bukowski is one of America’s best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany, to an American soldier father and a German mother, and brought to the United States at the age of two. He was raised in Los Angeles and lived there for over fifty years. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.

Gooey Marketing

I love Bukowski, so let me start with that. What I don't like about this collection is the marketing. All the love poems together reads like a gooey mess. I know that most of Bukowski's stuff is rewritten since his death (you can google this - there are plenty of websites on it) and I don't know if that is the case here. But, reading his other poetry books I've always felt his poems are best read as a unified whole - this is unlike other poets who have their great poems standing alone. For Bukowski there is the mix of emotions that comes out from a unified collection on love and loss. Here we just have love, and I just felt one poem after another becomes a gooey mess. Now - this may be my problem and likely is. I just found it too overbearing, too sweet, too precious to have them all together. I threw my book out - this from a Bukowski collector. Yeah, I hated it.

What kind of editor was John Martin...?

Fastidious Bukowski fans should find this collection fascinating. I'll make this brief. You've already heard or read that Buk's original manuscripts were heavily edited by John Martin. Here's the proof. Much of the poetry that appears in this collection is taken from Buk's original manuscripts, and much of what is in this you've already read elsewhere, in the Martin-edited versions. Did Martin's editing improve on the originals? You be the judge.

For the uninitiated: First read through this collection and then try to convince me that Bukowski was some sort of unfeeling, mean-spirited, misogynistic, misanthropic simpleton.
