what it is about

since no one else will say what this is about... this is the story of earth after a hugely destructive war, there is only the valley left that is not covered with water, and this valley is controlled by the Rulers, genetic perfections who can teleport themselves, and who dominate the lower class human Workers because of this ability, which the humans lack. into this place is born Cain, a clairvoyant, a telepath of unusual ability , he is a wonderfully portrayed character, a man too hard and too focused on his leadership of the rebellion of the humans against the rulers to see anything else, until a small orphaned boy is left in Cain's care--a boy whose unknown heritage will decide the outcome of this war over freedom and revenge. (by the way the ring doesnt really have much to do with the story, its just a good setting for the introduction) this book is sweeping and honest, Cain isn't nice or kind , but neither is he evil , you must decide who is right in this book , it isn't handed to you. like so much of real life, none of this is black and white, just shades of gray

Classic! One of Keys best!

It has been a while, but this novel is still seared into my memory. It brings to mind so many genres from modern screen epics, to comic books, to the "Ring" opera it honors, and the even earlier myths. The characters, storytelling and action are broad yet detailed and beautifully drawn. It's one of those books that you make you so sorry you've reached the last page. An absolute treasure

Moran did an incredible job with this one, and I would never surrender my copy. Even after reading it about a dozen times in the last 12 years, I still find it to be one of the most compelling pieces of sci-fi ever printed. His characters are memorable and realistic, and he succeeds in drawing you into their world. The whole story has an air of fable and legend to it that makes it feel like truly classic sci-fi.

Interesting read!

A very interesting read--I have been an ebayer for years and learned so much about ebay by reading this book, especially about the early years. The author was an awesome seller, with very clever ideas and although there were some grammar issues and typos, all-in-all it really was an exciting story and an enjoyable book!

This book is really stuffed with facts. Unlike other books, Michael describes every aspect how he built his company. It is must read for every enterpreneur. It would be great tho if there would be some sequel where he describes how he got out of his 600k personal debt.

So you're familiar with my background, I received a B.S. in Astrophysics and now I am a first year graduate student in an Applied Math program. I used this book as a supplementary resource when studying Partial Differential Equations - we got to Separation of Variables and then to Fourier Series. Every Physics student who graduates today has at least seen a Fourier Series (I hope). I didn't feel confident in my abilities so I bought this book to review.

Let me tell you, if this is your first time hearing about Fourier Series then this book is simply the BEST book to learn Fourier Series and much of the beautiful underlying theory behind Fourier Analysis! It's so well written and clear that I had absolutely no trouble following the text. I cannot express how clear and beautifully it is written, it is extremely rare for a math book at this level to be so vivid and eloquent! The proofs are easy to follow and the problems ease you into the subject presented in each section; which, in turn, are "bite-sized" and manageable. I studied the material by myself and walked away knowing Fourier Series.

There are plenty of good examples, the problems are great! If you're self-studying (or not) do as many of the problems as you can; if you read the previous two or three sections you should have absolutely no trouble going through the problems. Applications galore!

NOTE: This book isn't written at the graduate level, don't shy away from it because I mentioned being a grad student, I just wanted a review of Fourier Series. If I had to rate the level of the book I would say it's at a beginning upper-division level of a typical american university. If you've had a decent multi-variable calculus class, and are comfortable with partial derivatives, this book should be very comprehensible. It's clearer still to physics majors (or the like) who are more familiar with what and where specific equations apply to.

This book is beautiful, and I think it should be required reading of every physics and applied math student everywhere (maybe I'm just a little biased).

The ONLY caveat is that the Fourier Complex Series is left to problems, we don't get to use them to learn theory and get more comfortable with. This is okay since the cosine and sine series are equivalent to the complex series, it's just that the complex series is more elegant when doing problems or proving things.

If you are an advanced undergraduate student or a begining graduate student and want to learn not only the concepts behind Fourier Series but see how it can be applied to boundary value problems of mathematical physics, then this is "the" book you should read. It is well written - easy to understand and illustrated with lots of examples.

It's 7:13 am. I started reading Season Five last night and just finished. Another night gone, just like the night I sat down to read Season Four. Both nights were well spent and I can't wait to lose another night when Season Six comes out. You guys never fail to hold me prisoner from start to finish.

Season 5... spiraling ever downward into an intense, totally chaotic end sequence... 5 Stars

"Yesterday's Gone: Season Five (Episodes 25-30)" is a ongoing urban based horror series by co-authors Sean Platt and David Wright, with editing by Jason Whited.

The hunt for the 11 remaining alien vials continues; if the forces of Darkness gain possession they will likely be able occupy and control planet Earth. 5.b) I'm not sure if it was luck or with deliberate intent, but several chapters have dialogue that not only advanced the plot, but also bridge the gap between the previous seasons and this one. I found this latter technique more effective to 'refresh' my memory than the info found in the 'previously'. To be honest I found the 'previously' contained so much information, that It was a bit confusing.

6.) a chaotic finale... so uncontrolled and lawless I actually began to despair for our collective group of heroes. However, Sean and David justified this anarchic rampage by writing a brilliantly crafted epilogue. Bravo guys!

One more season to go... one more last chance for the good guys to turn things around... I can hardly wait.

Hurry up Season 6

I have spent the last few months being captivated by the Yesterday's Gone series. Although season five had a lot of ups and downs in the story line and characters, it always managed to captivate me to read on in order to find out what the hell was going to happen next! I love the collaboration and joint creativity of Johnny and Sean. The two of them surely have what it takes to make ANY story exciting!
I wait with eager anticipation for the final season in this incredible apocalyptic series. Get to writing guys, I'm dying here!

The brilliant and influential statesman, Itō Hirobumi (1841-1909), and the first prime minister of Japan’s modern state, has been poorly understood. This biography attempts to set the record straight about Itō’s thought and vision for Japan’s modernisation based on research in primary sources. It outlines Itō’s life: the son of a poor farmer, he showed exceptional talent as a boy and was sent to study in Europe and the United States. He returned home convinced that Western civilisation was the only viable path for Japan. Following the Meiji Restoration of 1868, Itō became a powerful intellectual and political force behind reforms of Japanese laws and institutions aimed to shape a modern government based on informed leadership and a knowledeable populace. Among his many achievements were the establishment of Japan’s first constitution―the Meiji Constitution of 1889, and the founding in 1900 of a new type of constitutional party, the Rikken Seiyukai (Friends of Constitutional Government), which, reformulated after 1945, became the Liberal Democratic Party that has dominated Japanese politics in the postwar period. Concerning Itō’s role as Japanese Resident-General in Korea from 1905, the author argues that Itō’s aim, not understood by either the Japanese home government or Koreans themselves, was not to colonize Korea. He was determined to modernise Korea and consolidate further constitutional reforms in Japan. This aim was not shared by others, and Itō resigned in 1909. He was assassinated the same year in Manchuria by a Korean nationalist. The Japanese language edition of this book is a bestseller in Japan, and it received the Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities, one of Japan's most prestigious publishing awards.

"What those guys said"

The reviews on this book are remarkably accurate. This is not a childrens' book. Even though decades have passed since it was first published, no other text has been able to bump it off a 'best in class' position. If you want to look to the sky for familiar shapes, this is the book for you.

There are a couple of fundamental ways to study the heavens. A 'modern' approach might be to put your head down, click in a few celestial coordiantes, and wait for the telescope to find a target for you. However a more interesing approach would be to find shape in the sky and locate targets manually. To do that you need to recognize those old landmarks in the sky, the constellations.

The big problem in identifying constellations is to find shape from seemingly random dots. Ray creatively used the same stars, but made 'new' stick diagrams that actually look like what they are supposed to represent. This makes a constellation much easier to visualize, remember, and recognize later. Other texts that attempt this effort fall short because they don't emphasize visual recognition clues.

A major fault of modern texts is the inclusion of unnecessary detail. Ray puts in a few choice details that help the memory and add interesting character to the figures in the sky. But by excluding minutia he draws the reader back to the goal at hand. Ultimately you need to memorize a blueprint of the sky, and this workbook will be your best friend to help reach that goal. Bravo.

A Guide to the Stars Simple Enough for Curious George but Sophisticated Enough for You!

The best introductory guide to the stars and constellations, bar none! It has numerous features which makes learning the constellations much easier and more fun. Here are a few examples:

(1) H.A. Rey has done a great service by redrawing the constellations (using the same stars) so that they *actually* look like the figure they represent. This is in contrast to so many other constellation drawings (by others) that bear no resemblance at all to the figure they supposedly represent. They come in two varieties: either they are lifelike representations with no correlation at all between the figure and the individual stars or they are stick figures that look more like abstract art!

(2) Rather than deluging you with lots of irrelevant facts, H.A. Rey has chosen some very pertinent, interesting facts and anecdotes to share about the stars and the constellations. These are the kind of facts that are fun to share with others when you introduce them to the constellations!

(3) H.A. Rey has very wisely left the more detailed and technical explanations for discussion later in the book. He starts off by telling you just the basics that you need to start stargazing right away!

(4) On the Calendar Chart pages you will see two star charts on facing pages. On the left you'll see just the stars and on the right you'll see the stars with the connecting lines to show the constellations. Going back and forth between the pages is a great way to start to memorize the celestial patterns so that when you get outside it will be easier to pick them out!

Best beginner ( i.e. non-astronomer) star chart book out there. I've had 3 copies of this book since the 1980's ( the bindings do not hold up to the intended purpose) , and will buy another when this one finishes falling apart. This is the book to have with you when you and your child / grandchild learn the nighttime sky together. I went to Grand Canyon National Park a few years back to see a spectacular Leonid meteor shower and was pleased to see that this is the star guidebook that the park sold. One rub on this book, besides the binding, is finding the most recent edition because the planetary tables make each edition "dated", but Sky and Telescope and other internet sources now offer up to date planetary tables. H. A. Rey had the ability to make complex subjects of astronomy understandable to the non-scientist. I've owned this book for over 30 years and I am still enjoying it.

Fantastic Resource

Not sure why it's not available from Amazon - it's on the Leon Paul site. The books approach is different for different levels of fencer - rather than just lumping all fencing knowledge into one text. And there's lots of break-out boxes, with clinics on improving specific actions. Plus, lots of action shots taken in domestic and international competitions, and with the full colour it's a bit like a thick luxury magazine than a 'book'. It has actual photos of all the fencing actions with arrows, rather than line diagrams, showing how actions are meant to be done. The intermediate section eases the reader into preparing for competitions and understanding pool sheets and DEs. The advanced section has all the latest sports psychology and elite physical training techniques - but best of all a whole lot of international fencer profiles.
