About the Author
James M. Henslin, who was born in Minnesota, graduated from high school and junior college in California and from college in Indiana. Awarded scholarships, he earned his Master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After this, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, and spent a year studying how people adjust to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology are the sociology of everyday life, deviance, and international relations. Among his numerous books is Down-to-Earth Sociology: Introductory Readings (Free Press), now in its twelfth edition. This book of readings reflects some of these sociological interests. He has also published widely in sociology journals, including Social Problems and American Journal of Sociology.

While a graduate student, Jim Henslin taught at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. After completing his doctorate, he joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology. He says, “I’ve always found the introductory course enjoyable to teach. I love to see students’ faces light up when they first glimpse the sociological perspective and begin to see how society has become an essential part of how they view the world.”

Henslin enjoys reading and fishing. His two favorite activities are writing and traveling. He especially enjoys visiting and living in other cultures, for this brings him face to face with behaviors and ways of thinking that he cannot take for granted, experiences that “make sociological principles come alive.”

An introduction to life outside the comfort zone

This book offers a very challenging, provoking, and intense look at the way that life can be totally different once we jump outside of our comfort zone. So often we live our lives based entirely upon habit. This book teaches that we can take another look at what we want, and decide to take our life and freedom into our own hands, without caring about what others will say or think. It is a great guide for people trying to do fantastic things, and wanting to see their dreams explode!

The approach is step by step, and is very much like taking a guided tour through life with the authors. Being very familiar with the material, I can sincerely commend the authors on their thorough coverage of the theme of psychology, the comfort zone, and the implications of living inside of the comfort zone. Every exercise makes you want to discover what life has in store for you outside of the box. Each one is like a bridge into the undiscovered country which we call the unknown.

The book is very helpful for anyone who gets into situations where there is no way out but to rethink solutions, and reinvent oneself. It offers many creative ideas, which can be like shoes upon the feet of people who want to wander the road towards self-actualization.

I was a bit skeptical about the book at first, when I first came in contact with it. But after going through the book many times , I was amazed to see that many of the things that are written make sense, and really can work out for people who have an open mind. This book helped me to see opportunities for growth, and areas of my life which I had stopped from developing unconsciously, because they were uncomfortable to explore, or too risky. Naturally I still have a lot to learn!

I think that the comfort zone is a huge theme, and because the authors cover it concisely for the most part, it does not bore, but moves well from exercise to exercise. I think the best part about it is that the book encourages you to always think of doing something new, which for me, is what life should always be: interesting, exciting, and free.

I wish I could offer some negative criticism, to be more balanced, but after reading the book through several times, and studying it very thoroughly, it seems that the most negative thing I can say is that it is an extremely challenging, but nevertheless very useful tool for anyone at all. Some of the ideas might seem insane, and granted, they might be a bit farfetched for some. But at the same time, if you are always doing the same thing in life, then the unpredictable and the unknown is probably always going to sound crazy.

In summary, I would have to say that the book is a stimulating, well written, practical, concise, and well thought out piece of literature which can help someone to get out of a rut in life. But of course that is only my opinion. If you are one of the few lucky people who are completely satisfied with where they are in life, and are living it absolutely to the fullest, then you probably do not want to waste any money on a book which challenges you to expand your horizons. But then again, if your life is already perfect, then why waste your time exploring anything new?

Don't read this book if you want your life to be limited as it is!

But, if you want to change things, and make a great experience in your life... this book is a MUST HAVE!
I've read several books about changing things and habits. But no one is like this. It changed my life immediately.

The difference to other books is, that you do not only read about the psycological background in our brain, but you have to take action.
There are about hundred challenges, that help you to get out of your comfortzone and reach higher goals in your life.

Read the book, DO the challenges and it will absolutely change your life.

Challenge yourself

I'm working in experiential education and this book outlines a lot of ideas to practice the comfort zone learn model. Challenge yourself to experience new things, to learn, to find adventures, to deal with fears and expectations.

If you don't feel like doing the activities written in this book you should definately challenge yourself and do them. :)

One thing you also can learn here is, that some actions aren't the right thing for you and that you're always able to return to the comfort zone if you like.

About the Author
Max Taylor is Professor of Applied Psychology at University College Cork, and director of the COPINE Project. He is a Chartered Forensic Psychologist, with extensive experience of research in areas related to the criminal justice system.

Ethel Quayle is a College Lecturer in the Department of Applied Psychology at University College Cork, and a researcher with the COPINE Project. She is a clinical psychologist with extensive experience of work with offenders.

a very good book

The book is very well researched and very well written. The authors explore not only the user of child pornogrphy on the Internet, but the psychology of collecting in general and the topic of computer addiction in general. They are quick to relate these topics to the topic at hand.

The authors are cautious against making unwarranted assumptions. They recognize the difference between child pornography and child erotica. In reply to Mr. Mankoff's question, the authors do not assume that all porno collectors are molesters. In fact, they explore the question of whether or not porno prevents contact crimes.

Just in case anyone is interested in using the book as a manual on accessing Internet child [...], the authors purposely omit any such information.

I haven't read the book yet (had to assign stars or this couldn't be posted) but I am curious as to whether the authors provide solid empirical evidence (not merely anecdotal) that the vast majority of those who download child pornography are also child MOLESTERS. We don't

assume consumers of adult porn are rapists. I deal with this problem

at [...] in a post called "Child Pornography Hysteria." I should say I personally have no interest in either child or adult porn and do not condone adults having actual sex with children.

Earnest and down-to-earth Jelly the jellyfish is the perfect foil for endearingly airheaded Narwhal. Divided into three tales, the book is light on plot but brimming with a fantastically kid-friendly sense of the absurd, from the friends' first reaction upon meeting each other ("You don't look like any fish I've ever seen, but you do look kind of jelly-ish." "Look…things like you don't exist. I mean what is up with that horn?") to the tale that Narwhal and Jelly spin in their metafictional turn, which has a waffle, a strawberry, and a sea monkey doing battle with a giant robot. The art has a childlike quality, and though Narwhal and Jelly are rendered with simple, thick-lined scrawls, the illustrations are expressive and energetic. Clanton includes just a few panels per page and breaks up some of the action with full-page spreads, resulting in a wonderfully accessible option for kids making their first forays into sequential art. A song ("I am a narwhal/a happy little narwhal!") and a brief section with facts on jellyfish and narwhals are fun additions (kids will be impressed to learn that the narwhal's tooth can be up to ten feet long and that the marine mammal can live 90 years). daughter loved it

My 8 year old daughter was needing books that were more advanced. I saw this and took a chance. I was glad I did. She was able to read the book without too much assistance and is so in love with this book. She loves the illustrations, story and learning about narwhals. She has read this book many times and reads it out loud to her toddler sister, who is also interested in the adorable drawings. My daughter hopes that the book will get a sequel.

Bought as a gift

Bought this as a gift for a 6 year old who loves animals. I cannot attest to how much she enjoyed it, but when I perused the pages I was laughing out loud. The illustrations are great and as mentioned the comics are funny. 6 might be the youngest I would give this book to, younger may enjoy the pictures and stories, but the jokes may be lost on them. Fun for adults and children.

Funny, cute, and educational

I was super excited to learn about 'a the Unicorn of the Sea' book. I initially planned on reading it on my Kindle but it looked so cute, I bought a paperback copy. It is part of a new series called 'Narwhal and Jelly'. One of my 'tater tots' loves Narwhal' so this book was perfect for us.

Inside it is laid out like a graphic novel and has really fun illustrations. There is also educational information throughout the story.

We loved 'Narwhal and Jelly's' friendship. We also really loved that their favorite food is waffles!

We had fun reading it and is it perfect for ages 8-10. We plan on getting the others in the series.

Rebecca sees first-hand the courage of her co-workers, who all share a dream of building a better life with the money they earn. She also observes the illnesses, injuries and anxiety caused by the harsh conditions and callous mill owners. When a decrease in wages is announced, the mill girls rally to stage a "turn out" (strike) and protest their predicament. McCully deftly weaves feminist themes into her spirited text, and her meaty author's note places her story in context. Her characters speak of self-reliance and education; they read and attend lectures whenever possible. The courage and ambition these role models inspire in Rebecca are palpable. Rough-edged watercolors, frequently awash in gray light, convey the often oppressive mood of an industrial town of the time. The shawled and bonneted women and an abundance of other period details add further historical depth. Ages 6-9.

Grade 2-4?This tale of child labor, early efforts to organize against unfair employers, and human courage is based on the true story of Harriet Hanson Robinson, whose mother ran a mill boardinghouse in 19th-century Lowell, MA. It tells of Rebecca Putney, a 10-year-old bobbin girl who follows the lead of an older firebrand and walks out of the textile mill in protest of a pay cut. The house provides the context to move the plot because it's there that the women talk about their goals and conditions. McCully's straightforward narrative is told in the third person with substantial dialogue. The artwork, realistic watercolors, supports the narrative but does little to move the story forward. Though crowd scenes offer opportunities for drama, the composition is somewhat static. Not all of the human figures are well-rendered. Some spreads are compelling, as in the after-dinner hours when the women sit around the fire, one wearily soaking her feet. Another striking scene shows one woman's collapse in the hazy spinning room. Despite Rebecca's central position in the narrative, she is primarily an observer and reporter and never really comes to life. The young women who board with Mrs. Putney endure the mill's bad air, loud machinery, high injury rate, and low wages in the hope of improving their lot, but when the mill owners threaten to lower their wages, the mill workers stage a "turnout," refusing to work. Although the protest fails, young Rebecca is proud of doing the right thing and vows to carry on the struggle. A Lowell, Massachusetts, textile mill in the 1830s may be an unlikely setting for a picture book, even one for older readers, but McCully weaves historical facts and fictional characters into an intriguing story. The author's note details the background, incidents, and people who inspired the book. Beautifully composed watercolor paintings give a vivid impression of America in the 1830s and bring the period to life. A useful book for history units. Carolyn Phelan

Jung in Africa is the first comprehensive historical account of C.G. Jung's 1925 'psychological expedition' to East Africa. Conducted when Jung was fifty years old, the safari was a watershed event which divided his life and thought perfectly into two halves. Fabulous!

I thought this book was fabulous! It seems that Burleson has researched nearly every detail on this 1925-26 safari. Thus, not only is it an interesting book on this portion of Jung's life but it is also a great insight into what was perhaps the last great walking safari across Kenya. Jung traveled by truck and railroad whenever possible, but the crossing into the desert of Sudan on foot makes for some interesting speculation. I loved the entire book and recommend it to Jungians and safari buffs alike.
