About the Author

Jeremy Yudkin was born in England and educated in England and the United States. He received his BA and MA in Classical and Modern Languages from Cambridge University and his PhD in Historical Musicology from Stanford University. He has taught at San Francisco State University, the �cole Normale Sup�rieure in Paris, Harvard University, Oxford University, and (since 1982) at Boston University, where he is Professor of Music and associated faculty of the Department of Judaic Studies and the Center for African American Studies. From 2006 to 2010 he also served as visiting professor of music at Oxford University. A recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Boston University’s Society of Fellows, the Camargo Foundation, and the Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation, he has written articles for the Journal of the American Musicological Society, the Journal of Musicology, the Musical Quarterly, Musica Disciplina, American Music, and Music and Letters, and contributed to several volumes of essays. His research specialties include the Middle Ages, early Beethoven, jazz, and the music of the Beatles. A noted lecturer, Professor Yudkin has given talks and presented papers across the United States and in Europe and Russia. He is the author of eight books on various aspects of music and music history, including Music in Medieval Europe (1989), The Lenox School of Jazz (2006), and Miles Davis: Miles Smiles and the Invention of Post Bop (2008).

Check that you don't need CD as well

My daughter needed the CD that went with this as well. We returned it unused for 1/3 the price paid. If it had the CD it would have been a great buy. Check before buying if that is required.

An outstanding love story

What a sequel! I would think that barely surviving a tsunami in the 2nd book would entitle Nikolas & Ben to a more sedate and calamity free life. Apparently calamities go hand in hand with being Nik & Ben because all it took was a plane ride over Siberia for another near catastrophic adventure to begin. And what an adventure! It's harrowing and nightmarish but more than that it's revealing. Disasters have a way of bringing out the best and worst in people and it's no different here. For the survivors, the harsh Siberian winter is not their only foe. They are also hunted by an unseen enemy so inhuman and terrifying that flight is their only recourse. For some reason I am reminded of orcs from LOTR especially the 7 footer with the dreadlocks. Filthy, smelly and cannibalistic. Ugh! The survivors need a hero and with Ben hurt, Nikolas rises to the occasion as only a man of his horrific background, Rambo-like skills and experience could. It's difficult for me to judge what people do to preserve life, their own and/or others when in a terrifying situation not of their own making. A few of the survivors showed themselves very poorly. Nikolas and Ben did not disappoint, not that I expected otherwise.

As if Siberia was not enough excitement, civilized London offered up its own tangled web of greed, deceit and evil in the form of Ben's newly discovered family. In a way, Siberia was easier for the two men. They faced death but they were together. Back in civilized society, they start to drift apart as Ben is tempted and lured by what he never had - an identity and a family apart from Nik. And Nikolas allows him the freedom to experience and choose for himself what course his life would take. Nikolas completely slays you in this book. The saying 'if you love someone, set him free...' comes to mind. Impressively selfless, there's not much Nik does in this book that is not founded on his all consuming love for Ben. Murder and mayhem ensue but love ultimately triumphs as it should in all fantasies. A truly impressive read that showcased love in its very best forms under the most trying of circumstances. Great plot, well written, easy to digest. Excellent characters, heroic but still very much human. An outstanding love story. 4.5 awesome!

Fantastic stuff--Action, Suspense, RL Horror, at Home and Abroad.

Wow.

Well, you definitely should read the previous books first! And if you have, you think you know what to expect, and you wouldn't be wrong, but there are always surprises! Ben and Nik have seemed solid since book one, but they are constantly tested, given who they are and their pasts and dark entanglements always coming their way. In this case, something out of the blue, when a trip to Russia, that could easily be a problem for them already, goes sideways for reasons totally having nothing to do with them. Then will need their past Special Forces and covert ops training to survive. Lots of action/suspense/adventure there. Very dark, and extreme.

And then you think, whew! They are still alive! And relatively safe! But then comes all the subtle and equally horrific relationship stuff, along with danger and pitfalls totally unexpected given what they have escaped from earlier. Nik feels he needs to never let his guard down, and given what our two guys have to deal with, he's not often wrong...

Fantastic stuff! I mean, it really is pretty darn fantastic, but if harrowing crap is going to occur, Ben and Nik are like magnets for it and as much as anyone, are equipped to deal with it. And the course of true love never does run smooth, or so they say!

This book was such a awesome addition to this series!
Warning this is a dark romance book and there are some parts of this book that may be hard some to read.

With this book we get more of Nikola and Ben as they closer to one another. Nikola must go to Russia and Ben wants to go with him.. Well lets just say after that this book went from really good to amazing!!!!

They encounter some very messed up men and lets just say Nikola must bring out the part himself he has thought he would never have to use again. These two men have to fight for their life in this book.

This author did a amazing job with this story and these characters in this book. We learn so much about Nikola and Ben in this book. You see how much Nikola cares for Ben and how much Ben cares for Nikola even though there at the end what Ben does with "not saying and giving away any spoilers" really irritated me and made me doubt Ben's feelings for Nikola.

So all together I really loved this book!
I would recommend this book!

About the Author
Christine Barbour teaches in the political science department and the Hutton Honors College at Indiana University, where she has become increasingly interested in how teachers of large classes can maximize what their students learn. At Indiana, Professor Barbour has been a Lilly Fellow, working on a project to increase student retention in large introductory courses, and a member of the Freshman Learning Project, a university-wide effort to improve the first-year undergraduate experience. She has served on the New York Times College Advisory Board, working with other educators to develop ways to integrate newspaper reading into the undergraduate curriculum. She has won several teaching honors, but the two awarded by her students mean the most to her: the Indiana University Student Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Faculty and the Indiana University Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists Brown Derby Award. When not teaching or writing textbooks, Professor Barbour enjoys playing with her dogs, traveling with her coauthor, and writing about food. She is the food editor for Bloom Magazine of Bloomington and is a coauthor of Indiana Cooks! (2005) and Home Grown Indiana (2008). She is currently working on another cookbook and a book about local politics, development, and the fishing industry in Apalachicola, Florida. Gerald C. Wright has taught political science at Indiana University since 1981. An accomplished scholar of American politics, and the 2010 winner of the State Politics and Policy Association's Career Achievement Award, his books include Statehouse Democracy: Public Opinion and Policy in the American States (1993), coauthored with Robert S. Erikson and John P. McIver, and he has published more than fifty articles on elections, public opinion, and state politics. Professor Wright has long studied the relationship among citizens, their preferences, and public policy. He is currently conducting research with grants from the National Science Foundation and the Russell Sage Foundation on the factors that influence the equality of policy representation in the states and in Congress. He is also writing a book about representation in U.S. legislatures. He has been a consultant for Project Vote Smart in the past several elections. Professor Wright is a member of Indiana University's Freshman Learning Project, a university-wide effort to improve the first-year undergraduate experience by focusing on how today's college students learn and how teachers can adapt their pedagogical methods to best teach them. In his nonworking hours, Professor Wright also likes to spend time with his dogs, travel, eat good food, and play golf.

So good, I'm mad.

The title of my review may confuse you. Let me explain. I found this book to be so effective in eliminating my back pain and actually helping me do it without medication or injections or surgery, that I am mad that every doctor does not recommend this book or at least the concepts and exercises to everyone suffering from low back pain.
I've been diagnosed with a focal disc protrusion in l5-s1. After even 1 hour of work, I would go to extremely painful and moving like I was 98 years old. Sitting was torture too. I couldn't stand, yet I couldn't sit, and I was in agony.I then discovered this book. ( Actually, a physical Therapist recommended I read it.) So, during my routine day, when the pain and discomfort became extreme, I would sneak off by myself, and do these exercises. It was like a shot of pain killer each time I did. At first, it only alievated the pain for about an hour or 2. I was admittedly repeating the exercises about 8 to 10 times a day. Then, the effects became more and more permanent. Today, I worked and only needed to do them twice. I'm on my way to a full recovery. So there you have it. I was suffering BADLY for about 2 months with no noticable improvement. After 3 weeks of doing what this book told me, I not only see the light at the end of the tunnel, I feel the bright rays shining on me. One more thing... I am in no way paid for saying this, and have no connection with the publishers/authors of this book. I'm just a person so happy to be feeling a lot better, that I want to spread the word. . .

Worth a Try

This book talks a lot about posture and how it can affect your back. Posture suggestions follow. The exercises recommended for most cases of back pain involve a person bending their spine backwards. These are done in the standing and on-your-stomach positions.

One thing I did notice about this back pain book is that it contains no exercises to strengthen your back- which I think is strange as it is well documented in the back literature that people with back pain have smaller than normal back muscles (Parkkola 1993 and Daneels 2000) when examined with CT scans and MRI's as well as weaker than normal back muscles (Smidt 1983 and Mayer 1985 and Mayer 1989 and Roy 1989 and Cassisi 1993). On this basis, I felt that this book was overlooking this important point and should probably address it with at least one strengthening exercise (I rec Treat Your Own Spinal Stenosis for that).

Having said that, I think this book will be most helpful for people with back pain that radiates into one or both legs due to a disc problem. People with spinal stenosis or a slippage of one vertebrae over the other (called a spondylolisthesis) will want to be careful with the backward bending motion as this might actually aggravate their pain.

"I first became acquainted with McKenzie's Treat Your Own Back in 1984 when, as a practicing dentist, I was completely incapacitated with low back pain and sciatica and unable to work. This easy to understand book enabled me to get well and remain well to this day. As a dentist who treats TMJ Disorder, I have recommended this book to hundreds of my patients. Why? Because people who suffer from TMJ Disorder (also called TMD) must understand that proper body alignment, posture and specific exercises are an essential part of their treatment plan. In my recently published book, Taking Control of TMJ: Your Total Wellness Program for Recovering from Temporomandibular Joint Pain, Whiplash, Fibromyalgia and Related Disorders, MeKenzie's work is emphasized. I continue to give copies of Treat Your Own Back to friends and patients who are suffering the crippling effects of low back pain. A friend who recently had suffered back pain and sciatica for weeks sums it up so well:"It's just like magic; relief was almost immediate, in three days I was totally without pain."

I have read this book twice in the last two weeks. There is a wealth of information that has been pulled from the dawn of time. It is interesting, thrilling, and captures the true essence of this subject. It is, without doubt, one of the most well-written books that I have read. Priestley has a witty, unique style that shows his interest in the subject and he has renewed my enthusiasm and drive to work in this area. It is a truly wonderful book.
