Gr 6-10–A great line-up of authors including Alane Ferguson, Heather Brewer, and Peg Kehret contribute tales that are sure to amuse readers, but not necessarily scare them. The selections include vampires, werewolves, weird little children, jokes gone wrong, and a cannibalistic family who like to prey on new babysitters. The stories are entertaining, but most of them are pretty tame. One standout is Meg Cabot's “The Night Hunter,” a tale about a girl kidnapped by a bank robber wearing a clown mask who ultimately hopes to be rescued by the folk hero The Night Hunter, immortalized in a pop song. Jennifer Allison's “The Perfects” is the one tale in the bunch that is actually creepy and will leave readers with an uneasy feeling at the end. All of the stories are perfect for reading around a campfire or at a slumber party without causing too many sleepless moments. Stine’s name on the spine may promise things that go bump in the night, but scary stories are only part of what this schizophrenic collection offers: mystery, thriller, sci-fi, light paranormal, humor, and even superhero sagas all take their turns. There are more uninspired entries here than one would like (do we really need another vampire-versus-werewolf battle?), but this collection does one thing very well: it keeps the reading level consistent, which makes it a good entry point for reluctant readers moving on from Stine’s own oeuvre. By far the best story is Walter Sorrells’ “Tuition,” a surprise-after-surprise roller-coaster ride in which a teen safecracker celebrates a very unusual birthday. Also worthy of note is “Suckers,” by Suzanne Weyn, which features an ending Rod Serling would’ve died for, and “Piney Power,” about a family of backwoods misfits who enact their own special brand of justice. I bought this book for my 11 year old son. He is trying to get out of the goosebumps stage. I went by online reviews and thought it woukd be okay for him. After reading a couple of the stories I can tell you its probably more for 13 and up. A couple of the stories were a little gory to my liking. He didnt seem to mind though.

Great anthology with a lot of variety!

I was a little uneasy, buying this book. Some of Stine's post-Goosebumps (original series) books have disappointed me, but I love good ghost stories so I gave this a try.

I'm very happy with "Fear." The stories feature a lot of variety, and everything from "good scares" to "gotcha" endings that made me laugh out loud.

In general, this book didn't skimp on the "eeeuuuuwww!" factor, but it didn't make my stomach lurch, either. So, for me, it was a Goldilocks book ("just right!").

If you want a fun book to read at night when the moon is full and the wind makes the house creak, this is a good choice.

I loved R.L. Stine growing up! So as a adult I decided to travel down memory lane and read one of his books again!! Very good book!! Each story was different!! Some made me want to look in the closet and under the bed!

About the Author
Tim Gilles has authored or co-authored several textbooks and has been active in professional associations for many years. He was president and a board member of the California Automotive Teachers (CAT), a board member and election committee chair of the North American Council of Automotive Teachers (NACAT), a member of the California Community College Chancellor's Trade and Industry Advisory Committee, and education committee chair for the Santa Barbara Chapter of the Independent Automotive Professionals Association. Mr. Gilles has also served several terms as a board member of the Santa Barbara Automotive Service Council and is active in industry associations such as AERA, The Automotive Repair Coalition, and IATN, including delivering presentations at numerous conferences. He was an automotive teacher for 38 years and is professor emeritus in the Automotive Technology Department at Santa Barbara City College. Mr. Gilles holds the industry certifications of ASE Master Automotive Technician and ASE Master Engine Machinst.

This is an overpriced textbook poorly put together with mediocre 2 colors and darkish invisible black and white pictures. I would look for other easier and much more fun to read full color textbook, and at cheaper price.

I needed this book for my class at Macomb Community College. It was the exact book I needed for class at less than half the price that the school was asking. The book arrived in perfect condition and saved me a bunch of money. Tim Gilles has written basically every book I have needed for this program. I have found this book and most of his other very well put together with accurate information. Next time I need a book for classes I will definitely have to check here first before going to the campus book store. The cover art and numerous diagrams and cut aways are very well illustrated.

Definitive Text for Chinese Ceramics

This volume is the latest in the Culture and Civilization of China Series - a collaboration between Yale University Press and Beijing Foreign Languages Press. For those who are familiar with this series it is quite free ranging in its subject matter, ranging from the classic "Three Thousand Years of Chinese Painting" which has become a fixture of Chinese art courses, "Chinese Sculpture", "Chinese Calligraphy", "Chinese Architecture" and a couple of books on Chinese Philosophy. Most of these (excepting the books on philosophy) are all lavishly illustrated coffee table books and aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the subject matter that can be accessible to both the lay reader as well as the expert.

Indeed this book does not disappoint, and I believe that it ranks with the best in the series (with the bar set high by Three Thousand Years of Chinese Painting.) It provides a series of strong introductory essays on the various dynastic periods, setting out the historical background and their representative styles in a multifaceted analysis - subject matter, composition, technical breakthroughs in glazing and firing methods. The essays on the Song and Qing Periods are especially good. After reading this one should have a good idea of the characteristics of ceramics of each period, what celadon and blue and white ware are and the characteristics of true porcelain.

This book also has the benefit of showing the best and most representative pieces without being confined to a particular collection, having compiled photos from the collections of the British Museum, the Musee Guimet in Paris, Museum of Asian Art in SF, the Topkapi Palace Museum in Istanbul as well as many University Collections and the latest findings from many provincial museums in China. An additional improvement over Three Thousand Years of Chinese Painting in that Li Zhiyan, as editor, has taken pains to maintain a continuity in the format of the essays throughout the books so they can be read separately or more rewardingly as a single narrative, and best of all the language is easy to understand without needing too much technical background or background in Chinese history.

Admittedly, there are several places that the book could have done better, during the early part of the book, when discussing neolithic pottery the lack of a compelling narrative makes it difficult to keep track of the various styles as one moves quickly from one settlement area to another. However, this may be one of the pitfalls of the archaeology of that period. I would also have liked additional diagrams / explanations of the sculpting / firing / glazing methods as these are usually described in long wordy explanations. In some chapters I felt there weren't enough photos (the text described various pieces that were not shown) given the unprecedented access available to the scholars, although I realize that at 608 pages the book is already a brick by artbook standards.

Although this book will not provide anything new for the dedicated collector / historian, it is by far the best single work in English yet available, and the quality of the photos are superb. It offers very good value for money as I have paid the same price for art books of around 200 pages or so and this runs to 600 pages of color photos and quite dense text. I wish had had this work when I was first starting to learn about ceramics!

Durling's new verse translation of the Inferno joins recent versions by Robert Pinsky (LJ 1/93) and Mark Musa (LJ 3/1/95). While Durling's translation (with Italian on the facing page) does not use Dante's rhyme or line divisions, it captures the metrical rhythm of the original. Beautiful prose version of Dante's extraordinary poem

I feel so enthusiastic about this book that I want to tell everybody about it. This translation is unrhymed; it is in prose; and it follow's Dante's syntax and meaning closely. If you know a little Italian, you can use the text (it is a bilingual edition) as a crib to read Dante in the original, which is a tremendously moving experience. Dante's Hell is full of striking characters who still feel the passions they experienced during their life in history; only now their identity is even more sharply defined because they are living in eternity. The narrator travelling through Hell, guided by Virgil, is filled with fear, pity and anguish. Dante's writing is extraordinarily beautiful and supple.

great translation, great notes

The Durling-Martinez edition is the one used in my college Dante class. Together with their translation of Purgatorio (their edition of Paradiso apparently still in progress), the two works have great endnotes for every canto of the poem, good appendices and Purgatorio has a series of 'intercantica' notes which refer the reader to all the parallels between the two works, so you don't have to remember that the Gates of Hell and the Gates of Purgatory are found in Canto 9 of their respective works.

I wrote this review because the top reviews for this edition were all in fact for other editions, and this one definitely deserves its due. It may be more expensive than Mandelbaum's paperback, but its worth it. The print is larger, the language clearer, the notes more useful. Try it out.

A Beautiful Translation and Informative Endnotes

Dante's _Inferno_ is truly one of the most fascinating and riveting epic poems of all time. This edition of the _Inferno_, translated by Durling Martinez, is wonderful, jam-packed with all sorts of extras that lend itself to study and careful examination. The Italian verse and English prose translation mirror each other on each page and Martinez's translation is extremely user-friendly, allowing the reader to get caught up in the emotion of Dante's powerful masterpiece without trying to observe the strict meter requirements of the original.

In addition to the Italian text, Martinez provides copious amounts of end notes to each Canto. The only shame is that they are presented as end notes and not as footnotes, forcing the reader to thumb back and forth frequently while reading. Many of them are so interesting and helpful that it would have been useful to be able to access them with more ease. That being said, however, once you see the size and length of the end notes, you will understand while they have been given their own section.

On top of all of the end notes, providing the historical and literary context for all of Dante's allusions, this edition also include illustrations, including one showing the organization of Hell, and sixteen short essays that focus on various aspects of the _Inferno_. At over 650 pages long, this edition is a serious one and is best used for serious study rather than a book to shove in your pocket for pleasure reading. But if you desire to delve into the _Inferno_, this edition is fantastic for its amount of scholarship and user-friendliness. I highly recommend this edition for any fan of Dante and anyone approaching the _Inferno_ for the first time.
