It may sound like an ad, but it is also a wakeup call

Looking at the other reviews for this book, it appears people either love it or hate it. It does make repeated references to the authors' consulting company and the "success stories" they have achieved using the principles in the book. That being said however, if you simply "tune out" the self-gratifying bits, there is quite a bit of useful content in this book and it is laid out well. I started reading it on a cross-country US flight and found that I could not put it down. I did gloss over the "advertorials" for Adaptive Path, but could readily relate to the pitfalls described as my current company (and several previous companies) have fallen into the trap of thinking that customers simply want more features and functions crammed into a single product. I actually applied what I read in the meeting that I was flying to, tuning my comments and suggestions away from features and traditional product design and development methods. Instead I looked at it from the vantage points discussed in the book -- designing for the user experience and designing a "system" of products that work together instead of cramming it all into a single product. And it worked -- we resolved several lingering product issues by looking at the overall experience the user expects instead of the minutiae of the functions and screens.

This book is a wakeup call for product designers and marketers -- stop focusing on features and try to understand what the user really wants to accomplish with the product. While this is not radical new thinking, the straightforward style in which the information and concepts are presented should make it easy for just about anyone to finally achieve a "d'oh!" moment when it comes to designing products and services.

disappointing and flawed discussion of user experience design

I was disappointed when I got my pre-order of this book. At a scant 160 pages, I was skeptical that it could offer very much insight.

On reading it, I was proven correct. Much of the book was nothing more than an extended advertisement for Adaptive Path. Case studies were too short to learn much from. The only case study really discussed in depth was of Target's new prescription bottles, which have been discussed more in depth and more usefully in too many other books.

The book's eight chapters are full of short sections; many of them read as though they are blog entries. They're strung together with little regard for content or context. The seventh chapter, a flawed discussion of agile development, is completely worthless. The book could have been so much better if the authors had taken the time and effort to better consider their arguments and write a more cohesive work.

If you can look past the book's many shortcomings, there are some interesting nuggets in there. Sadly, the useful bits comprise less than 10% of the book, but they're good enough to earn this book two stars.

Advice and Advertisement

I got this book about product marketing because I wanted to gain insight on the marketing of my own product [...] so I was a little frustrated by the overall direction and focus of the book which is to motivate the reader into hiring Adaptive Path. All four authors either currently work for or have recently worked for that marketing company. According to the on-line edition of the book, there are twenty eight references to Adaptive Path in the content.

While light on theory, the book does give good advice. This advice is mostly in the form of what not to do. This most probably reflects Adaptive Path's pain points in earlier engagements with customers. Don't use competition as your main driver. Don't depend on novelty. Don't get stuck on research or reporting. Don't get stuck on product design. Don't over-engineer. Don't get too confident about what you think your customers want.

If there is only one important take away from this book, then I believe that it would be this. It's all about the user experience. What you should be focusing your design efforts on is the user experience. What you should be focusing your strategy on is the user experience. The only thing you do that your customers care about is their experience of your product or service.

They heavily advocate using an Agile methodology. They agree with early prototyping, failing fast, and continuous customer involvement. They are lukewarm on the SPARC model.

a must read for any bodybuilder

This book will contradict antything you have probably read in the past about bodybuilding. The books starts off with a short biography of Dorian Yates. Then it slowy introduces the reader to Yate's training principles. This book teaches short and intense training periods and lots of rest. The principle stressed is High Intensity Training, or HIT. This training method was the brainchild of Arthur Jones, then was the basis for Mike Mentzer's heavy duty training, which is what Yates used tobased his training. Dorian put his own twist to it and calls his version Blood and Guts Training. What this book teaches is highly beneficial book to a bodybuilder, especially one who is not using steroids. Of course Yates used steroids, but his methods will work better for a natural bodybuilder than the methods of most boybuilders, aka High Volume Training. Yates preaches for the bodybuilder to use no more than three sets: the first being a warm up set, and the next two set being to muscle failure. He advises a two day split for the body and in a 2 weeks time you will have done six workouts. It is set up where you do workout one twice the first week and once the second week, and you do workout two once the first week and twice the second week, then the schedule starts over. Yates said this split is near identical to the one he used his first years in bodybuilder. His advanced training utilizes a three day split, but he only used one set per exercise, really putting a lot of effort into intensity.

The informtation in this book i give five stars, but i gave it four stars for another reason, All of the pictures in the book, which are black and white, are grainy and almost blurry. And there are no real good Pictures of Yates really, ther are about five decent pictures of him: the one on the cover, a front double biceps pose (which is used about three of four times throughout the entire book), a side tricep pose, and just a few others are barely decent. Everytime you turn a page in the book it puts a crease in the spine, so if you plan on reading this book a lot you can also plan on eventually losing a page or two. The cosmetics and durability of this book is why it recieved four stars.

Overall, every bodybuilder needs to be familiar with Yates training method no matter how hardcore or serious of a bodybuilder he is.

Intensity

Dorian is my favorite bodybuilder, so I'm somewhat biased. I grew up emulating Arnold and studying his book, but after a few years the whole high volume routine became ridiculous and a waste of time. Dorian has it right - high intensity, one set to failure, don't hold back. The results tell it all. And if nothing else, it sure makes weightlifting a lot less boring.

I work out this way now and get either the same or better results compared to high volume. Put everything into that one set after a couple of warmups. Of course, many other pros still do high volume, and they're huge, so maybe it's just finding what works for you.

The book is kind of simple, but so is the system. Train all out and become huge. Period. Dorian obviously didn't feel the need to make a bible like Arnold did. He tells it like it is, and that's it. To be fair, there is very good detail on how to train each body part, his life story, etc...a lot of stuff I didn't know before reading the book.

But from a pure training perspective, I'm not sure I learned anything more than I did when reading Dorian's Flex articles when he was competing. But those were great articles! If you don't have those, or want to get more detail or background on Dorian, then buy this book. Some very motivating photos also, and it's not expensive.

Outstanding book

Provided the title of the book is taken into account: Namely that this is about both the LIFE and TRAINING PHILOSOPHY of Dorian Yates, this is a 5 Star book.

The book provides a nice insight into Yates' past and present (as of the publication of the book) life, and also into the progression of his weight training. As such, the book will be an excellent primer on weight routines that should work nicely for beginner, intermediate, and advanced lifters.

Couple this book with a Kinesiology book such as Dr. Yessis' book on Kinesiology, and you would have the beginnings of an excellent library on bodybuilding.

Defining the Principles of War

As a former SF officer who served with three special units, two in RVN and as a ComSec officer responsible for TS information with special compartments, It is just plain painful to witness the failures of Obama/Clinton in disregarding the first principle of warfare which is to recognize and define the threat. Dr. Gorka is a master spokesman and articulates the threat, defines the enemy and offers common sense solutions. i have urged my Congressman here in Texas to read Dr. Gorka's book and to urge his colleagues to do the same.

About the Author

David J. Garrow is Professor of Law & History and Distinguished Faculty Scholar at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. He is the author of four books, including Bearing the Cross: Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography. He is a regular contributor to the Washington Post, New York Times, and The American Prospect. He lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Barack Obama: pre-Presidential life

"Rising Son: The Making of Barack Obama" by David Garrow, (May 2017).

WOW! The first thing that impresses a reader is that this 1,461-paage tome feels like it weighs like a 10-lb. sack of flour (okay, really only 7.2 lbs.).  About 78% of the book is analysis (1,078 pages), with the balance being: notes, bibliography, and index.

The author deeply delves into studying the upbringing of U.S. Pres. Barack Hussein Obama from his childhood years up to his announcement that he would run for the office of the U.S. President in mid-January 2007.  The author doesn't really analyze the 2008 presidential campaign itself in detail, but notes several crises that could have severely hurt (and possibly derail) Obama's campaign. In the Epilogue, the author does briefly review both presidential campaigns, and notes some highlighted events in Obama's presidency (hey, only about 35 pages of reviewing his eight years in the Oval Office).

Being a libertarian, I was surprised to read: "Barack claimed to Time [magazine] that as an undergraduate, 'I was reading Milton Friedman and Friedrich Hayek,' famous conservative economists,", but doesn't relate how those two influenced him outside of apparently stimulating his survival spirit: "... Barack told the Tribune [newspaper] that 'I had to scratch and claw my way to the point I am now....'" (p. 1049).

The author reviews how the controversial remarks of Rev. Jeremiah Wright impacted Obama's campaign, as well as questionable sexcapade controversies during his college years.  The author's legal credentials will have to serve as how one views the "truthiness" of the author's contentions and discoveries.   I wasn't involved in Obama's campaigns, and like most will need to await the feedback of Obama's staff in (partially) validating some aspects of the author's portrait of our 44th president.

Hey, there's almost 1,100 pages of critical analysis, so there is indeed extensive commentary on Barack's teenage and collegiate life.

Undoubtedly, anti-Obama conservatives will be pleased with the many revelations in this book, but they undoubtedly will bemoan "if only this stuff had been revealed earlier!"  Obama fans will pan some of the author's contentions, but most of us will be impressed with the extensive research that the author has undertaken in exposing so much of the unknown Barack (at least to those of us who didn't follow his Chicago, liberal community-organization activities, state senate votes, and his brief U.S. Senate career -- topics which the author discusses in great detail). [Brent Staples has a fine review in The New York Times.]

Finally a book on truth and not written as a fluff piece towards a stepping stone for a presidential bid. Politics is a ugly business and power hungry people are capable of anything, or becoming anyone to reach their objective. It's time we all realize that it's not a game show... it's a business called power.

Ah well, the damage is already done, but at least this can help us prevent him - or someone like him - from ever holding power again. Well written and includes all kinds of facts that were covered up by the corrupt media the past 10 years.

Off the Mark

This latest novel has all the elements of classic Singh tome, quirky characters, lurid sex and hints of the author's brilliant and distinctly Indian humor. But unfortunately Burial at Sea falls far short of the mark set by Singh's earlier work like Delhi and Train to Pakistan. Burial at Sea seems harried from the beginning and very scattered, lacking direction. The conclusion doesn't fair any better as the tale ends abruptly and unsatisfactorily. It seems like this novel was written in a rush, meant to either quickly satisfy a publisher's contract or to add a boost to the author's bank account. Unless you have a serious pension for Khushwant Singh and simply must read this new work, then I suggest that you don't.
