About the Author

Evan Kleiman is the executive chef and owner of Los Angeles' enormously successful Angeli Caffe. The Next Best Thing To Eating There

Like another reviewer, I spent a few weeks this past summer in Italy. In a small town near Rome I had one of the most memorable meals of my life. In Naples I had a plate of spaghetti with fresh tomato sauce and basil so good if I'd dropped dead right then and there, I would have died a contented man. When I got home, I wanted to recreate the food I had in Italy. This book, and all the others La Place has written, showed me how. I have other Italian cookbooks and I love them all. What distinguishes LaPlace's books is that she makes cooking a simple, quick undertaking so you don't feel like every meal's the final exam at Cordon Bleu. Along with speed and simplicity, she captures the improvisational, unpretentious essence of the best Italian cooking. Flavors are allowed to speak for themselves, they get amplified, not sauced over or cooked out of existence. The results of her recipes are dishes so fresh, easy, and authentic if I sit back afterwards over a cup of authentic Italian coffee (made according to La Place's directions in the excellent La Bella Cucina), I can almost hear Vesuvius rumble, almost hear the waves in the Bay of Naples. No one who buys any of La Place's books will regret it.

Having just spent a month in Italy, Cucina Rustica takes me back every time I use it. The recipes are simple to make and delicious. Especially wonderful is the Ribollita, zuppa di ceci and all the fagioli. The Spaghetti al Pomodoro Arrostito is the easiest to make and best tasting sauce ever. It's the only one my teenage son will eat (and he "hates" tomatoes)! Be sure to use fresh ingredients and shop at an Italian grocery store if possible.

A staple cookbook

Given to me as a gift a few years ago, this cookbook has become my most used. Recipes are simple to follow and raves at the table are guarenteed. Recommended recipes: Goat Cheese with Sun Dried Tomatoes, Light Minestrone, Shrimp with Rosemary... and so many more. I have since given this book as a gift to many, MANY friends!

About the Author

Amy S. Kinser, Esq., Series Editor

Amy holds a B.A. degree in Chemistry with a Business minor from Indiana University, and a J.D. from the Maurer School of Law, also at Indiana University. After working as an environmental chemist, starting her own technology consulting company, and practicing intellectual property law, she has spent the past 15 years teaching technology at the Kelley School of Business in Bloomington, Indiana. Currently, she serves as the Director of Computer Skills and Senior Lecturer at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. She also loves spending time with her two sons, Aidan and J. Matthew, and her husband J. Eric.

Kristyn A. Jacobson

Kristyn holds an M.S. in Education from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and a B.S. in Business Education from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She has been a faculty member and department chair of the Business Technology department at Madison College in Madison, Wisconsin for over 14 years. She also serves as the curriculum coordinator for Microsoft Excel beginning, intermediate, and advanced level courses for the college. Eric Kinser received his B.S. degree in Biology from Indiana University and his M.S. in Counseling and Education from the Indiana School of Education. A Panorama on wastelands landscape

Niall Kirkwood has edited a very interesting panorama on the problems of wastelands and brownfields from the overview of the landscape researchers [what they insist in calling "manufactured sites"].
The book presents many well analysed study-cases and has a collection of theorethical texts produced by the editor and invited colleagues that covers many voids on this fundamental theme to better understand our complex and mutant cities.
We just remain intriguing on the resistant use by the authors on terms and concepts well developed by many expertises on the problem, mainly the architects: the "terrain vague" classic concept developed by the Catalan Ignaci de Sol�-Morales; "wastelands" and "brownfields" by many American authors; "urban voids" used by many European thinkers [Koolhaas] to describe and analyse these residual spaces, usually derived from the post-industrial territory.

The purpose of this book appears to be to provide a thoughtful overview of current approaches and issues that includes numerous case studies of actual sites, including such well-known brownfield redevelopments as Duisburg Nord in Germany, Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island, and the Sydney Olympic's site.
Overall the value of this volume is in making a bold start at "rethinking the post-industrial landscape", as the subtitle suggests. Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of the book is the gritty, substantive role it charts for landscape architects in brownfield reclamation"

It assembles authorities on the science, engineering, planning and design of brownfields and other remediated
sites and is necessary for anyone involved in the reuse of these landscapes. Simply the only book addressing the intersection of different disciplines and fields who have to confront the legacy of the 20th century industrialization.

About the Author
Martin Handford spent much of his childhood drawing and his earliest influences were cinema epics and playing with toy soldiers. At art college he continued to draw what he calls "busy and militarily correct battle scenes" which led to his job as a freelance illustrator specialising in drawing crowd scenes for numerous clients. Martin now gathers his inspiration from a huge variety of sources; films, visiting museums and art galleries, reading comics and books, and collecting ephemera and trivia. He is fascinated by crowds, and is attracted to their vibes, patterns and details - especially humour; "I love their movement and energy." Gradually, from all this meticulous research, the inspiration for a picture emerges, which Martin embellishes with his own ideas to create astonishing scenes. Each picture takes Martin months to draw. "As I work my way through a picture, I add Wally when I come to what I feel is a good place to hide him," he explains.

The BEST Waldo book

If you have never seen a Waldo book before, here's a short overview:
"Where's Waldo" series consists of unique colorful picture books where the illustrations are filled with hundreds of tiny characters doing all kinds of funny things. Your goal as a reader is to find Waldo, a guy in red and white shirt on all those pictures. If finding Waldo gets too easy then you can spend countless hours trying to find other special characters and situations. Mentally, this activity is similar to assembling a 5000 piece jigsaw puzzle, only it's more fun.
One great thing about Waldo books is that even small children can spot Waldo as well or even better than adults, it doesn't require any skills other than good eyesight and ability to pick out details. This makes it fun to read together and compete with your kids of virtually all ages, not just 4-8 as the Amazon reading level suggests.
Now when you know the basic idea of Waldo books but only want to get one (just one book can keep anyone busy for days!) and don't know which one to pick, "Where's Waldo Now" is definitely the best one in my opinion, being the most educational and interesting of the series. It features Waldo traveling through time from one era to another. He has to visit cavemen, ancient Rome, Vikings, Crusaders, a Middle Age European town, Aztecs, samurais, pirates, a royal court, Wild West, and finally a space colony.
Definitely worth the money.

The first and the best

I will always be partial to the first 2 Waldo books in the series. There is real creativity, freshness, and fun.

My personal opinion is that the later books have more people (i.e., the people are packed on the pages like sardines), but less creativity/spunk. Honestly, when there are 5,000 people on a page like it seems there are in some of the later books, it can become more frustrating than fun. Instead of looking at the cute scenes and interactions between the characters, you're busy searching through a mass-reproduced mob for an all-but-impossible to find Waldo. It's like if another artist/illustrator tried to copy the original Waldo books, but lost some of the spirit of the books in the process.

I own all of the Waldo books, and as a general rule of thumb with Waldo books I'd say the earlier it was published, the better it is...with the exception of the Hollywood book, which is better than the 3rd.

My 4 year old got a Waldo book from her grandmother and loved it so much that we bought this for her for her 4th birthday. She LOVES finding all the things! Each book gets progressively harder than the previous. These are soft bound books.

Excellent Learning Tool and an Easy Read

As a longtime digital artist relatively new to the After Effects arena and Compositing in general, I find this book to be an invaluable learning tool that I'm constantly referencing. It's very well written and manages to integrate both the artistic side and technical side of compositing and After Effects. It's not overly heavy on tutorials, which is nice, because those can be found anywhere online. Instead, the book explains by showing how and why using a certain tool or method is the optimal approach. There's often sidebars that explain the technical reasons as well.

Part of what I like most about the book is the tone of the author, Mark Christiansen. He's got a sharp wit, that's evident in his writing style and I caught myself laughing a few times which I can't say has ever happened to me while reading a book on software/design training. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to beef up their After Effects skills and more specifically, those who want to learn compositing as an art form.

Great intermediate level After Effects book!

I am very very impressed by this book. I'm currently working on a video project for a course I am taking and I have to finish a number of shots with various motion graphics and effects. I'm familiar with After Effects, but certainly no master at it, so I wanted a book that focused on compositing and more advanced effects that the beginners training and books do not cover in sufficient depth. This book has come through for me big time! The thing I love about this book is that it talks about various topics and various approaches and tools within after effects you can use to solve those problems. It even talks about various suggestions for 3rd party plugins, in cases where the basic After Effects tools are lacking. It doesn't hold your hand, telling you what buttons to click, it assumes you know all that, or can figure it out. Topics in the book include keying, color correction, explosions, beam effects, smoke, fire, rotoscoping, and all kinds of other neat things. This one has definitely earned a permanent place on my bookshelf, and new status as my favorite After Effects books (and I have quite a few).

Great book!

I also own the CS3 book by the same author.

Highly recommended. Lots of detailed information to be found, both for After Effects and VFX/Compositing in general.

I could probably be categorized as an intermediate user and the book seems to be at the perfect level for me. There are probably better books for an absolute beginner, but everyone else will find a reason to keep it around, even the seasoned pros.

About the Author
Gary Bertoline is the Associate Vice President for Visualization Computing. He formerly was Department Head and a Professor in the Department of Computer Graphics Technology. He is the co-founder of the Digital Enterprise Center in the School of Technology, and, in the 6 years he served as Department Head, he more than doubled enrollment, funded projects, and donations to the department. Prior to becoming department head he was on the faculty in Computer Graphics Technology for 4 years. Prior to joining the faculty at Purdue, Gary served three years as a faculty member in the College of Engineering and Department of Engineering Graphics at The Ohio State University.

good book.

I got this book for my CAD class(we modeled the problems with solidworks). I actually needed to get the newer version of this (one with the green cover) but i got this and pretty much all the problems were the same. Some were numbered differently and the pages were off a little. For example, the problems on lets say, page 90 of the green one , start in page 87 in this one. I just compared with my friend who had the new one and found the problem on mine.
The book itself is good, they have alot of problems to practice with, though no solutions are given for these. But the chapters explain stuff quite well with alot of pictures and examples showing the definitions. Its a thin book and easy to carry around as well.

A noble purpose, but overly lacking

Disclaimer: I am making the basic assumption that people reading this review know the details of Stven Stayner's abduction and return after seven years.

I debated overnight on writing this review and finally decided to average the two main themes of my review. This book is a loving tribute from one friend to another. It is an admirable and worthy eulogy to a man who was taken from his family and friends (once by evil and once by God) too young. It serves a noble purpose and makes a sincere attempt to educate both parents and teens in preventing child abduction and child abuse. If that were the only criteria to base a review on, I would give it five stars.

Yet, it does a disservice to the reader. The author is very forthcoming in mentioning that this is a dramatization (also known as fictional) of actual events. It is the execution of the fiction that I find completely awful for the four reasons listed.

1) An adult reading this book will be able to discern truth from fiction and will be able to accept the creative license taken with thoughts, events and conversations. A teen reading this book may very well know what the words, "dramatization" and "fiction" mean, yet they may not have the ability to determine what is truth and what is invention.

2) There are unnessecary conversations, lines of dialogue and some events are just too descriptive. Example: At two separate times in the book, both Steven and Kay do not know the meaning of the word, 'Caucasian'. It was unnesseary the first time to have the segment of the police interview once, let alone twice. What purpose did it serve/

Example 2: I feel awful for saying this, but the 8th birthday of Ms. Carr was much too detailed.

3) The atrocious grammar and errors in spelling just can't be ignored. Example 1: "Ola, amigos" instead of "Hola, amigos." Example 2: 'Sacremento' instead of 'Sacramento' and Example 3: "Is Kay and Delbert home yet?' instead of "Are Kay and Delbert home yet?" Understandably the person uttering the line of dialogue may not be someone who uses the correct plural on a regular basis, but there is an obligation to the teen and tween reader to sometimes clean up errors. When I read errors like this I can't help but think there will be one child (or more) who will spell Sacramento wrong and be just as determined it is correctly spelled as Sacremento as another generation actually believes Jack Dawson sailed on the Titanic.

4) I felt the depiction of Cary Stayner was inappropriate. Cary was 19 years old when Steven returned and has admitted to the fact he was jealous of the attention Steven received. The lines written about 19 year old Cary smacked of the underlying anger society feels for him now and are sensationalistics. It panders to the lowest common denominator and just didn't belong in the book - even if those instances were factual.

Three final thoughts:

1) Ms. Carr and Mr. Laughter have written this book unselfishly. They didn't want fame or TV ratings. They wanted a book that did portray a Steven not as damaged as the Echols book or the miniseries. They obviously spent a lot of time interviewing people and put a lot of effort and heartfelt love into this book. For that, they should be applauded.
2) Since this is fiction and the audience to read it will be teens and tweens, I feel something very important is overlooked. Steven drank and smoke while underage. Steven used illegal drugs. Steven was promiscuous and had unprotected, consensual sex. As much as teenagers hate to be lectured to, it probably should have been addressed that these things are either illegal or have other consequences. I believe this could have been done without being overly "preachy."
3) This is imporatant for parents....if your child is sexually naive or you feel he/she does not have the concept defined of how an adult male will possibly seuxally abuse a young boy (and you are not prepared/ready to explain it to them), they are too young to read this book.

how kidnappers operate

Jim Laughter provides an inside look at the despicable crime of kidnapping. He reveals the methods and techniques used to isolate the victim, usually a young child. I must admit that I often read a portion of a book and then give up on it because it is boring and is wasting my time, but not with this book. I found it to be entertaining and well-written.
Steven Stayner not only escapes, after seven long years, but he manages to free a younger child who is kidnapped by the same child molester. Stayner testifies against his abductor, then goes on to present programs at elementary schools in an effort to see that children and their parents are aware of dangerous situations. All parents should read this book.

This is a positive spin on a bad situation. I loved the way the story ended and that Steven did such good thing despite the fact that he was treated poorly by his abuser. He did not forget the love his family had for him and decided to save another regardless of what might happen to him. This was a tear jerker for me...loved it!

This book is a must for your Spanish library. It groups words by subject, so if you are looking for the specific name of something (sport, vegetable, item at the beach), it is easy to find.

Fantastic! And the CD is great too!

This book is fantastic. It is organized in a way that you can quickly review a page or little section each day to really learn your vocabulary quickly and easily. I leave this book on my nightstand, and every night before I turn off the light, I go through a page, memorizing the whichever words are new to me (or not as familiar as they should be).

Also, this book comes with a CD that has flashcard software on it. For the low price of this book, the flashcard software alone is worth the price. You can ADD words to the computerized flashcards -- heck, you can even use the flashcards for subjects other than Spanish!

This book and its CD are worth their weight in gold.

A definite must-read for everybody in the aviation business! Tons of great information and ideas about how to create a comprehensive and long term marketing plan using social media.

A warning... you'll need a pen and paper while you're reading this book to write down specific things you need to do for your business.

Full disclosure: I've worked with ABCI in the past and am probably biased toward their strategies since I know how well they work.

Unsolicited Review - This is totally worth the few hours of reading time.

Read this on the flight to national NBAA convention. This book is worth the few hours of reading time because it is REALLY helpful. Why? It is packed with concrete practical analysis, tips, and recommendations on implementing an effective social media presence. Highlights for me: 1) The fighter pilot checklist of Observe/Orient/Decide/Act, 2) Why Content Matters - with a half dozen effective items to include in postings, 3) LinkedIn Success Stories, 4) Why Google Plus is Worth Evaluating.

Read it. I mean it.
