Miss Elsie Stanhope resided in Nottinghamshire, an area so rich in titled gentlemen, so felicitous for marriage-minded mamas, it was called"the Dukeries." Indeed, Elsie had been betrothed since childhood to the heir of a dukedom. She had no expectation it would be a love match. Still less that she would enter into a shockingly scandalous affair with an altogether different sort of lover. And the very last thing she imagined was that the mysteries of his birth would be unraveled with as many unforeseen twists and turns as the deepest secrets of her heart.

An amazing tale with many twists and turns!!

Elise Stanhope's life is all planned out for her. She has been engaged since was a child and soon she will be married to her betrothed. She couldn't be more unhappy about it. While she is reserved to know that she will do her duty for her family, she feels like there is more to life. She knows that feeling is true the moment she sets her eyes on her muralist's assistant. There is something about the man that makes her feel alive. Too bad there is nothing she can do about it...or is there?
Alexander's life has been anything but a happy one. He is unable to talk when scared or in public and that infliction has ruined his life. Now an assistant to the renowned muralist Monsieur Laurent Desmarais, he is content with his life. He has always wished for a family and a wife, but he knew that he would never be able to have one. That doesn't mean that he can't dream about it. His life is about to change the moment he walks into Mansfield Hall.
This story is wonderful and will be a hard one to review! I will apologize right off. Normally my reviews are filled with details and basic plotlines, but no spoilers. I can't even give you that this time. It seems that anything I say would ruin things for you. There are amazing twists and turns and I just don't want to ruin any surprises for you. The love story of Elise and Alexander is best enjoyed on your own. Ms. Goodger is an amazing story teller and When a Duke Says I Do shouldn't have one detail leaked.
There is passion, suspense, intrigue and a villain that will leave you shocked and irate. I absolutely loved this novel!! This book is exquisitely written, with amazing details and characters that were captivating and fascinating. From start to finish, I couldn't put it down. Ms. Goodger has found another fan. I can't say enough about this incredible book...well I can...GET IT NOW!!

Good writing, bad editing...
By Letitia
How do you rate a book that made you smile, made you laugh, made you cry... And yet, for a too long period - made you bored.
I adored the impish Elsie and the stoic Alexander for the first third of the book. They had a cute and impossible romance brewing. And, while it is completely obvious exactly who and what Alexander is - I won't bother spoiling it. His crippling shyness was endearing, and Elsie's constant insomnia was intriguing. I enjoyed how they were each other's cure.
But I did not enjoy the few character POV changes. Particularly when they were pointless and unwarranted. The change to Aunt Diane's POV during a ball, her only POV in the whole book, seemed out of context with the rest of the book. It added nothing to this story. And if it was an attempt to set up a book featuring Aunt Diane, well, it was a lame attempt.
The middle third of the book was boring and slow. Alexander's fight to claim his birth rights dragged on for far too long... which gave a lot of page time to Elsie reflecting on her feelings for Alexander.
The last third of the book picked up again. I could understand Alexander's hurt over what he believed to be Elsie's choice, but his personality underwent a major change from the first. His recovery from his crippling, vomit-inducing shyness was a bit too perfect. Too complete. And too fast.
And there was some vagueness over the amount of time that passed after the wedding. It wasn't written terribly clear. It felt like a week had passed then, come to find out, not even 6 hours had gone by... Then two months passes. There were definitely pacing issues.
The writing was lovely, but it felt like an amateur job with editing. I am surprised this was not an independent publish. Whoever was in charge of editing this book at Zebra dropped the ball. They did not give the author great guidance.

great read, blurb doesn't do it justice
By lili
As someone who is getting tired of the historical romance genre with its few plot types, i can honestly say this one was a surprise all the way through. The heroine was interesting without being a total feminist as many of the heroines are and the hero catches your heart from the very first. The blurb makes it seem as if the story ends as soon as the heroine figures out who the hero is, but it doesn't. It keeps going and only gets more and more interesting after that.
