Love and purpose............................................

Even in the 60's the main issue for a teenager appears to be doin' it! In the middle class section of Washington, D.C. Naomi Jefferson lives a normal life that is occasionally spoiled by racism.

"Normality" appears to dip off when Joshua, her older brother dies. Now the differences between race in America becomes a very personal plight as Naomi is set on honoring her brother.

This girl just can't get it together. Leaving too many regrets and bumpy roads back in Atlanta. Naomi returns to her parents' where she finds work in a city councilman's office. With no room for advancement and the weight of an unhappy relationship Naomi finds herself back off to school.

In time Naomi joins a consulting firm, and is engaged. Just as she's passed over for a different position things in her life seem to be oh so hectic. Only to add the sudden knowledge of a teen age boy that is her brother's son. Is this true? Naomi is determined that her nephew will have the opportunities that her brother didn't.

As Naomi battles daily with issues of family obligations is there room for love?

From Adolescence to Adult.... the story of a woman.

This book was great because it spanned a young woman's life... from young frienship, puberty, sexual awakening, parental struggle, independence, love, hurt, and all of those things over again.
Naomi is a 13 year old girl who is from a middle-class black family from Washington, D.C. Her parents are educated and articulate, but used to living the lives of people who are supressed. Her brother Joshua, decides to strike out against the white man... this is during our nations time of extreme strife - late 60's- early 70's. He is smart, supportive and determined to make a difference.
Meanwhile, Naomi is concerned with hanging out with the 'priveleged ones' who live on what is called the 'gold coast' of Washington D.C. neighborhoods. She is also concerned about dating and then eventually the big question of 'doing it' even though her Mama has warned her against 'letting a boy touch her'... it could ruin her life.
The book travels from Naomi's pre-pubescent life to college to early adult-hood, to mature woman... all the while exploring what all young women go through.
Wonderful story... a can't miss !

Intriguing and familiar

Big Girls Don't Cry is entertaining and yet very familiar. Those of us who grew up in the 60's and 70's can relate to Naomi Jefferson's different predicaments and how she handles life's ups and downs. Naomi appears so grown up at times and yet she is a little intimidated by life.
At the very beginning of the story, Naomi lets you know she has a mind of her own and challenges any decisions that are made on her behalf. But as she goes through adolescense and into womanhood, she loses some of that self-confidence when it comes to her relationships with men. She isn't very rational at times and falls into the trap of letting herself become a door mat for these men that she so-calls, loves.
I love the way, Ms. Briscoe leads you into Naomi's life so much that you find yourself wondering what is going to happen to her next or you think that's it, she hits you with another twist to the story and you cannot put the book down.
We have all been there at some time in our life. It's facinating to read how someone else handles the dilemmas of life.

Controversial approach to happiness

The concept of flow is widely known these days, but on a superficial level. So what can the original book teach us? Flow is defined here as a state when you're "so involved in activity that nothing else matters", no surprises, but it is presented in a greater context, as a way to achieve happiness.

We're told that "psychic entropy" (or lack of control over conciseness, or simply random thoughts), is the thing that prevents happiness. Flow, on the other hand, is "optimal experience", the reverse of psychic entropy. Actually, this scale from psychic entropy to flow *is* the measure of happiness. Then, the book gives some conditions for achieving flow -- basically finding tasks that are challenging enough, but not too much, together with unambiguous and fast feedback (I found that part somewhat vague). And there's a lot of examples of flow experiences. Everything can become flow, if challenges are sought and overcome. Every chapter fits into a solid book structure.

But it's not clear the structure makes sense. Yes, being engaged in activity at proper challenge level can be very rewarding. Is it an answer for everything? Is unhappiness indeed the same as psychic entropy? Maybe if one cannot concentrate on anything at all, yes, but hardly in all cases. Is suppressing distressing thoughts by finding a random engaging experience the best approach? No matter what that experience is? True, the book does mention that some flow experiences are not necessary good, but then goes on giving a lot of examples of flow, regardless of their value. If I'm constantly bothered by a bunch of unresolved problems, would it be wise to go and find some flow experience, to suppress the thoughts about these problems? Maybe find flow in washing dishes? Even if I manage to get very very engaged in that, will I feel a slightest bit better afterwards?

The book was originally published in 1990, and it shows. I found no mention of Daniel Kahneman' concept of experiencing self and remembering self, which means that no matter how pleasurable flow might be in the moment, it is only one part of the story (see "Thinking, Fast and Slow"). There's no mention of Daniel Gilbert, who claims that people mostly stay at their baseline happiness level, and so expending great effort to become happier is probably a mistake (see "Stumbling on Happiness"). Instead, we find some favorable mentions of Mr. Freud, for the first time in all the books I read.

Flow is probably an important part of good life experience, and this book is important in giving examples of flow. But equating flow with happiness is very controversial, and too much of the book is based on that equality.

Live your life in FLOW - this book will help you get there!

The first sentence of the Preface sums up this book nicely: "This book summarizes, for a general audience, decades of research on the positive aspects of human experience - joy, creativity, the process of total involvement with life I call flow." I had been hearing a lot about "flow" pertaining to how we live our life, and it seemed like a good concept. After reading this book, I can confidently say it is a GREAT concept! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is ready to enter a state of mind that will allow you to make any activity completely involving and satisfying.

The mental state we should all long for

At the beginning this book seemed to me to have a very interesting theme because since a long time ago I became acquainted with Timothy Gallwey’s books (The Inner Game of Tennis, Golf, Work, etc.) and I became very interested on the theme of sports psychology. And not only that, I became fascinated with the idea of how this psychology relates with the rest of human psychology. As years went by, I learned to try to use these concepts for everyday life. I learned that the principles discussed in those books were not exclusive to sports; they are relevant to the spiritual life of every human being.

The book Flow describes that there is a mental state in which human performance reaches excellence. This state features some interesting aspects, of which the most important is concentration. When a human being reaches this state, time seems to stop, enjoyment is superlative and self-consciousness disappears, as if one reached the state of communion with some deity. This state is what the author denominates “flow”.

By reading this book, I learned to call this state this way, which I think is very appropriate. Everyone of us have experienced flow at some point in our lives. When this happens, whatever we are doing can be qualified as excellent. In my own experience, I have been surprised by my own performance in some tasks throughout my life once I concluded them. I have had some brilliant moments on rare occasions and I can say that the main attribute in all of them has been good concentration.

Timothy Gallwey’s books deal precisely about that concentration and the interaction among our different selves that affect such focus. When concentration is maximized, incredible things usually happen. Human greatness rests precisely in its capacity to stay in the “flow” state which let humans conquer goals that would seem incredible by any observer.

The “flow” state is the state to which everyone should aspire in every moment of his or her existence. If that cannot be done, it is due to the attachments that block them. Such attachments need to be minimized in order to reach this state.

It would seem strange that such issue deserves so much attention: increase in human performance. But whenever we try it, we realize that excellence in performance provides great happiness. But such happiness is not the result of the pride of having reached a goal, but of having been concentrated for a moment. When we are focused in something and reach the “flow” state, we realize that that is the goal of our existence, at least during that moment.

After all, ancient Greeks institutionalized Olympic Games for a reason: they were searching not excellence in entertainment, but rather excellence in concentration. On the same token, eastern experts who practice martial arts reach excellence only after the subject is able to enjoy a profound spirituality at the moment of combat. This means that pinpointed focus is what lets humans relate with their creator. This may not relate very well with traditional Christian doctrine, but oriental religions seem to follow this statement. At any rate, even Christian religions go a long way dealing about taming the self (temptations, mental vices, pride, etc.); what they deal with is liberating people of whatever distracts them from living their lives with excellence, even in the most trivial daily activities. In other words, religion tries to each happiness and in order to do that, humans need to do whatever is necessary to reach the flow state. This is not easy since in order to conquer trust and tranquility it is necessary to live a good life. Whatever that means depends on every soul. And the field in which the flow state should be reached also depends on every person.

In think the "flow" state is related to an important concept that was discussed at length in the book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig, and which is named "quality". This concept is much more than what we usually mean by it, since although it has something to do with excellence, its effect on human lives has much to do with his or her happiness and transcendence. In that book, "quality" is not only explained, but also demonstrated through philosophies established throughout several centuries. Therefore its reading, although dense, is extremely interesting.

But this book (Flow) goes a long way to explain this term in a sensible manner and using examples from daily life that everyone of us can relate to. In fact, while reading this book, there were some instances in which the author used examples from his personal life, explained through several pages just to prove a small point. I wished he did not use so many examples just to keep me from losing the main point.

However, the flow concept is very important and I am grateful that someone went a long way to put it accesible and in simple terms. We cannot say that the way to happiness is the same for everybody, but definitely all those ways have a common ingredient: the "flow" state.

About the Author
Gordon L Rottman entered the US Army in 1967, volunteered for Special Forces and completed training as a weapons specialist. He served in the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam in 1969-70 and subsequently in airborne infantry, long-range patrol and intelligence assignments until retiring after 26 years. Stuffed with History

I believe I have read almost everything ever written about the 11th Airborne Division in WWII, and yet this book surprised me and taught me new things. The information about the physical training was especially eye-opening. This is not a suspense-filled page-turner, but if you want to know what life was like for paratroopers in training and at war, this is the book for you.

It is almost impossible to effectively teach the McGuffey readers without this set. Okay, maybe not impossible, but you'd have to hand write your own set and hope you didn't miss anything. These are EXCELLENT! A definite "must have" if you're using the McGuffey readers.

Exactly as expected

I bought these cards to be used with the book The ABC's and All Their Tricks. They are a good pair. The cards come with a nice poster that I put on a piece of poster board and then clear contact papered over - just to make it sturdy. It should hold up nicely for several school years. The poster is a great help for older children (2nd - 4th grade) and the cards are nice for the younger ones (K-1st) My daughter actually keeps the cards in her binder so she can study them at her leisure. They are very plain cards - no pictures and only black and white. I knew that going into it and am happy. I really like how they break down the usage of vowels into percentages (not actual percentages but whatever sound that letter makes most would be the first sound listed, second most would be next and so on.) It seems to be a very practical way of teaching why letters are there etc. I don't know if they are absolutely necessary to have but they are nice to reinforce letters and for oral drills.

Awesome cards!

I love using these to tutor my students in Reading. I taught elementary school intermittently since 1982. I add my own 'kinesthetic' lessons to accompany these but am well-pleased in the simplicity of this program; simple flash cards with letter on front, and sounds and rules on back. The chart that comes with it is very good too. Once someone learns all these sounds, they will be able to read anything!

reasonably good guide but there is no rhyme or reason to their selections. For short stays it would be best to sample a little of each category a city has to offer and give readers a couple of options in there. This book lays out an itinerary and doesn't explain why those items were selected. Is it a cultural or historic site? Is it the most popular museum? Does it give the visitor some insight into how people live day to day there? None of that.

About the Author
Ken Hatfield was a US Army Air Corps Photographer in WWII who later studied Geological Engineering at Michigan Technological University. Ken worked as a field geologist for 30 years and then retired. When he decided that he couldn't stay idle, he then taught at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan for ten years, before retiring again at 71 years old.

Hidden Treasure

First, a disclaimer. I worked with the author for many years. But that isn't why I'm reviewing the book and giving it five stars. In fact, I'm not really reviewing the book but trying to draw attention to it because it contains something very rare: a first hand account of the discovery of a hidden likeness. This is in a chapter called Monument Valley. The author describes looking at a number of uranium deposits whose origins were unclear and seeing a relationship which showed them to be like seemingly different deposits elsewhere whose origins were better understood. It describes his feelings as he saw the likeness. Joseph Bronowski (Science and Human Values) describes this as finding unity in variety, and says that when this happens the "heart misses a beat". You can feel that in the author's description.

"How," asks Kellerman, "will we ever stop what we refuse to see and study?" Research director of the Center for Public Leadership and lecturer in public policy at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, Kellerman focuses in opening chapters on the nature of leadership, the rise of a "leadership industry," the complicit role of followers, the definition of bad leadership and reasons for its occurrence. Kellerman's style combines the direct prose of the boardroom with the erudition of the classroom; relevant citations abound, from Machiavelli and Thomas Hobbes to Newsweek and Washington Monthly. Kellerman posits seven "types" of bad leadership and devotes a chapter containing a few brief examples and one detailed analysis to each. Drawing from the corporate, nonprofit, government and public opinion sectors, she examines instances of incompetence, rigidity, intemperance, callousness, corruption, insularity and even evil. Her focus isn't limited to individual behavior; context and the actions of followers are also considered. For example, the International Olympic Committee is faulted as much as its former president for scandals and commercialism that have sometimes undermined the games. High-level cabinet members, prominent legislators and the nation as a whole share the blame for the Clinton administration's failure to intervene in Rwanda's genocide. The stories, and Kellerman's final section of correctives, are complex and nuanced; there are no easy answers.

Bound for the top of the business best-sellers lists--at least in terms of the controversy it will generate--Harvard lecturer Kellerman's book argues cogently, compellingly, and with an amazing clarity for the identification of bad leadership and, then, for its removal. Too long has the concept of leadership been viewed only in shades of white within America--and, thus, too long have we denied the existence of bad leadership. Neither are followers excused, for they, too, have a real culpability, asserts Kellerman. Types fall into seven categories, either ineffective or unethical, and include incompetent, rigid, intemperate, callous, corrupt, insular, and evil. And for each, she selects one recent example on which to focus, in addition to minor players, from former Mattel CEO Jill Barad and Reverend Jesse Jackson to Jim Jones and Saddam Hussein. As any good academic problem solver, she lists those corrections necessary for leaders and followers to adopt. The real question is, Will this book be ignored? Hopefully not. Barbara Jacobs

Learning from Bad Examples

I enjoyed reading this book. The author creates a typology of bad leaders and leadership and fits to it short and long case examples than include many horrific and usually well known (even infamous) examples of bad leaders. The author begins by noting some of the tensions about writing about bad leaders as compared to good leaders. However, it is clear one can and should learn from the case materials provided and that the sense of defensiveness is misplaced. The book is accessible and easy to read. The author provides a few short case examples followed by one that is much more extensive to illuminate each type of bad leadership. Readers are led through an all too common landscape of leadership, management and corporate horrors often tacitly supported by boards, external auditors and regulators. The book by combining an array of bad leadership examples provides an authoritative look at this darker side of the workplace making it a good source of examples. The typology provides a framework that encourages examination of the workplace for the attributes of each type. The author also underscores the enabling aspects of submissive, fearful and indifferent followers who help to create and sustain the leader's pathologies. The book however does not attempt to explain in any depth why bad leaders behave the way they do leading to the suggestion of a books such as Leaders, Fools and Imposters by Manfred F.R. Kets de Vries as one example of a psychodynamically informed examination of leadership pathology. The concluding chapter offers some standard and idealistic suggestions on avoiding and combating bad leadership, a somewhat disappointing concluding chapter for an otherwise good book. As the author notes, there are no easy answers when it comes to the adverse outcomes created by the darker side of human nature.
